Breaking the Loop

Breaking the Loop: How to Move Beyond the Patterns That Once Kept You Safe

August 27, 20262 min read

Not every pattern needs to be destroyed.

Some of the things we now want to change were once incredibly useful.

Being highly capable may have helped you succeed.

Being independent may have helped you cope.

Being agreeable may have kept the peace.

Working harder may have given you a sense of control.

Staying alert may have helped you anticipate problems.

The difficulty comes when a strategy that once helped you through one chapter continues running the show long after the circumstances have changed.

I’ve had to learn this myself.

There have been parts of my life where I thought I needed to become better, stronger or more disciplined, when actually I needed to understand why I was responding to life in the way I was.

That distinction matters.

Because you don’t necessarily break a pattern by fighting it.

Sometimes you break it by understanding it.

You notice what triggers it.

You notice what you automatically do next.

You notice what you are trying to avoid feeling.

And, most importantly, you begin creating a different response.

That is where change becomes real.

Not when you make one dramatic decision, but when you repeatedly choose something different in the small moments where the old pattern would normally take over.

Eventually, the unfamiliar becomes familiar.

And that is perhaps one of the most hopeful things about change.

Your nervous system can learn something new too.

Reflection

Choose one pattern you are ready to change.

Complete these four sentences:

When I feel ______, I usually ______.

What I’m really trying to protect myself from is ______.

The response I’d like to practise instead is ______.

Then look for one small opportunity this week to practise the new response.

You don’t need to become a completely different person.

You may simply need to stop asking an old version of yourself to lead a life that has already changed.

These four work particularly well together because they create a natural progression:recognise the pattern → understand the loop → recognise the life transition → practise a new response.
