When Your Life Is Changing but You're Still Living From and Old Pattern
There are seasons of life where everything around you begins to change before you fully understand who you’re becoming.
This can be an uncomfortable place to live.
The old version of your life no longer fits, but the new one hasn’t quite taken shape.
I’ve experienced this as I’ve moved through different stages of my career and questioned some of the assumptions I’d previously made about success, work and what a fulfilling life was supposed to look like.
For a long time, I thought the answer was to find the next thing.
👉 The next role.
👉 The next opportunity.
👉 The next project.
But eventually I realised that sometimes the next chapter isn’t asking you to do more.
It’s asking you to become different.
This is where change can become confusing.
You can have a completely different life on the outside while still operating from an old internal blueprint.
You can have more freedom but still behave as though you’re trapped.
You can have more choice but still make decisions from fear.
You can have outgrown an environment but continue looking for validation from it.
The old pattern doesn’t disappear simply because your circumstances have changed.
It needs to be recognised.
And sometimes the most important transition in life is not from one job, relationship or location to another.
It’s the transition fromwho you had to be to survive a particular chapter to who you actually want to be in the next one.
Reflection
What has changed in your life that you haven’t fully allowed yourself to acknowledge yet?
Where are you still behaving as though you’re living in an old chapter?
Write down three things that are no longer true about your life.
Then ask:
If I genuinely believed those things were no longer true, what would I do differently?
That answer may tell you more about your next chapter than another five-year plan ever could.
